Fighting the earth's emergency

Event ad

This event, joint hosted by the Environment APPG and Climate Change APPG, will provide an opportunity to highlight the urgent need for action ahead of, during and post COP26. The event will feature a discussion and Q + A on the Richard Gere narrated film, Earth Emergency, exploring:

  • The role of filmmaking in increasing awareness on environmental issues.
  • How Parliamentarians and the public can work together to support ambitious climate action.
  • How human activity sets in motion Earth’s own natural warming mechanisms, releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and further warming the planet.
  • The importance of COP26 and priorities for the summit.

Speakers

  • Anthony Browne MP (Environment APPG Chair and MP for South Cambridgeshire)
  • Caroline Lucas MP (Climate Change APPG Chair and MP for Brighton Pavilion)
  • Anna McMorrin MP (Net Zero APPG Vice – Chair and MP for Cardiff North)
  • Prof. Dan Mitchell (Professor of Climate Science, Bristol University)
  • Bonnie Waltch (Earth Emergency producer)
  • Susan Gray (Earth Emergency director)

Film synopsis

In Earth Emergency, climate scientists explain how warming caused by human activity is setting in motion Earth’s own natural warming mechanisms, releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and further warming the planet. Out of dozens of environmental feedback loops, Earth Emergency focuses on four, explaining how warming in forests, permafrost, the atmosphere, and the poles work together to accelerate warming in dangerous, amplifying cycles. Despite these feedback loops pushing the climate to a point of no return, they are not generally understood by the public – or many policymakers. Narrated by Richard Gere and featuring the Dalai Lama and Greta Thunberg, this revealing film uses captivating illustrations, stunning footage, and interviews with leading climate scientists to examine the missing piece of the climate puzzle. The program conveys the urgent necessity to stop these cycles and let natural systems do their job of removing carbon, preserving the delicate balance necessary to maintain Earth’s temperature.
