This event, hosted by the Environment APPG, will explore the introduction of a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for drinks containers in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Given the Government's recent consultation on this, and significant public interest in and support for a DRS, now is a timely moment to explore what is needed to implement the scheme and ensure resource efficiency is at the heart of the UK's transition to net zero emissions.

In this session, panellists will discuss the potential for a DRS in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, exploring:

  • The importance of a DRS in making UK resource efficiency policy truly world leading
  • How a DRS could reduce littering, boost recycling rates, and incentivise a shift to a fully circular economy
  • What an effective DRS could look like in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and the regulation needed to make this a reality
  • Key lessons that can be drawn from the implementation of a DRS in Scotland and other countries
  • The role of businesses, producers, and consumers in a DRS
