In this planning roundtable, parliamentarians engaged with experts Charlotte Mitchell (National Grid), Sarah Mukherjee (IEMA) and Councillor Richard Clewert (UK100) on how to deliver on clean energy targets whilst protecting nature and considering the views of diverse communities. MPs and peers discussed how to address major skill gaps that would help balance the need for green infrastructure with protection for nature, whilst addressing the lack of engagement in the planning system from working class and diverse communities in particular. They also discussed the need for engaging communities before major planning decisions are made to give them a voice in the process, particularly in smaller energy projects, and debated ideas like providing money off bills for communities hosting energy projects to build support for them.
